To Turn Pain into Life
<img width="1452" height="1454" width_o="1452" height_o="1454" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/993186de6872dd114963771a7d2fae2d9712d4858e3e5929609566901a4ff7d2/Screenshot-2024-11-22-at-1.50.59-AM.png" data-mid="223725766" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/993186de6872dd114963771a7d2fae2d9712d4858e3e5929609566901a4ff7d2/Screenshot-2024-11-22-at-1.50.59-AM.png" />

My
tattoo art practice represents a way of radical becoming, an attempt
to deterritorialize notions of pain, death, taboo, and crime by
recognizing its power to transform and transmute. The necessity of
painful sensations, the question of im/mortality, and the culture
surrounding socially unrecognized or even criminalized
practices—tattooing interrogates the hegemony of the human body,
life, and death. It suggests that there is no prescribed way for our
bodies to look or for our lives to be lived, challenging the norms of
physicality and embodiment. My tattooing is mindful of these
contexts, becoming radical in the sense that it facilitates
liberation from traditional body image standards.

In this sense, my tattoo works visually remembers and archives personal and collective memories and stories, addressing themes such as life, death, trauma, pain, and resistance. Through the juxtaposition of dark yet delicate imageries drawn from nature—infused with a necroaesthetic sensibility, which explores the beauty and life found in the decay and death— I provide tattoo art as a complex experience that ignites a transformative dialogue on the complexities of human experience and embodiment.

Rin Jung, a Brooklyn-based multimedia researcher, independent documentary filmmaker, and tattoo artist, and Matt Wallenstein, a Pittsburgh-based writer, poet, and tattoo artist are collaborating to offer this interdisciplinary tattoo art project focused on sharing and caring the experience of grief and loss through the creation of memorial tattoos.

... AND SO MY LIFE BECAME A FUNERAL: Memorial Tattoos and Their Stories hopes to provide an artistic experience of embodyng the physical and emotional transmutation of remembrance and mourning. Through this project, we discuss grief, mourning, and the feelings of missing those we remember, while also sharing memories and celebrating their lives. We hope to reframe our understanding of encountering death of someone in our lives as a significant experience of carrying on and remembering meaningful memories and moments that now accompany Us in the lives we have left to live, rather than viewing it as a damage and loss where the person is gone and has left us for good.

The Story

“As much as it absolutely devastates my heart to think of your last days and moments, I feel responsible to live the days you had to leave behind, for you and instead of you. As much as your death hurts, living the days that you should have lived will hurt just as much. I feel the pain of your life more than the event of your dying. It is now part of my pain, and your death is now part of my life.”
- A eulogy&nbsp;for a friend, February 2021

I started this project while reflecting on the memory of my close friend, who passed away almost four years ago. She was an incredibly important person in my life—almost like a life mentor. The day after her passing, I had a tattoo appointment scheduled, originally intended for a design of white chrysanthemums. Coincidentally, white chrysanthemums are the flowers traditionally brought to funerals in Korea, where I’m from, to mourn and remember the deceased. The tattoo was done by Matt, the artist who collaborated on this project, and also a close friend of my late friend. The tattoo became my personal memorial for her, allowing me to carry her memory with me always. When I wrote the&nbsp;eulogy for four years ago, I gained a deeper understanding of how to approach the death of a loved one. I wanted to view mourning not as a way of letting them go forever, but as a process of integrating both their life and death into my own. As long as my life continues, I will remember them, and their memory will live on within me.

The title of this project comes from a quote in Han Kang’s novel Human Acts: “After you died, I could not hold a funeral, and so my life became a funeral.” This resonates deeply with the reason people get memorial tattoos. Even when a formal mourning ritual is completed, there are often unresolved matters—things we couldn’t say soon enough, things we couldn't do to process the experience, the grief that doesn’t end. And memorial tattoos offer a way to continue that mourning throughout our lives. They become a medium we continue the mourning through which we carry the meaning&nbsp;and memory of the deceased on our bodies.
In this project, I also explored the ideas of spectral realism, hauntology, ghosts, and memory—particularly after reading Ghostly Matters: Haunting and the Sociological Imagination by Avery F. Gordon and Haunting without Ghosts: Spectral Realism in Colombian Literature, Film, and Art by Juliana Martínez. These works examine how memories of the departed, or their "spectral" presence, resist the violence of erasure and oblivion. I interpret this "haunting" as any act of remembering the dead, and I wanted to understand&nbsp;the&nbsp;ritual of getting a memorial tattoo as a way of doing justice to that memory. It provides a physical space for remembrance, ensuring that those who have passed continue to live on in the lives of the living.
Any tattoo artist has probably worked on a memorial tattoo at least once in their career. These tattoos are more than just designs—they create an embodied shrine, a lasting tribute to those whose deaths have become part of our lives. Therefore, the artists who create them, play a vital role in the experience of mourning, grieving, and remembering. With this project, we hope to create a space where these emotions and thoughts can be shared and expressed, ultimately transmuted into a tattoo that honors and preserves memory and life.

A conceptual and interdisciplinary tattoo art project incorporating trauma and memory with bodily and artistic transmutation inspired by Korean shamanistic practice of making a talisman. The project brings a conversation between the client and myself to navigate our trauma, stories, and memories. Based on this conversation, I design and tattoo a piece that symbolizes the client’s power to bring meanings in life and their strength. I was inspired by the Korean shamanistic practice of making Bujeok, a talisman that is drawn to prevent negative affects and bring positive fortune when someone is having an issue in their life. Like a Korean shaman that prescribes a Bujeok, I wanted these tattoos to be talismans that also brings will to life and generates transformative power. The project uses multimedia practices of speaking, writing, photographing, filming, drawing, printing, and more.

“This project will focus on the relationship between tattoos and trauma, exploring how tattoos can facilitate the processing and coping with these experiences. Getting a tattoo can be a therapeutic experience that allows individuals to reclaim control over their bodies. While trauma can strip away this sense of control, the act of getting a tattoo helps restore autonomy and self-empowerment. A tattoo serves as a reminder of resilience and strength. In this sense, tattooing functions as both a shamanic ritual and a form of therapeutic transmutation.

As a tattoo artist, I aim to embody this shamanic role, incorporating elements of Korean shamanism. 부적 (Bujeok) are Korean and East Asian Daoist incantations and magical symbols, created as talismans by Daoist practitioners. Their purpose is to ward off bad spirits, lift curses, and invite good blessings. Shamans typically provide these talismans based on the individual client’s issues, which is the practice I hope to adapt into my tattooing.

I will create a personal talisman tattoo for you in exchange for your memories and stories. You are welcome to share anything, from minor misfortunes or regrets that still haunt you, to deeply traumatic experiences that you haven’t had the chance to process. Together, we’ll identify the visual elements that can help you process these experiences and transform them into a meaningful talisman.”

CONDEMNED TO BE FREEDir. Rin Jung &amp; Richard Rivera / 2023“Why do we live?” “What is freedom?” The filmmaker follows a formerly-incarcerated scholar, educator, and activist telling his story to seek answers to the philosophical questions on human being that are brought upon by the encounter with carceral system. This short personal documentary creates a filmic dialogue on the experiential and existential, yet poetic narratives of carcerality, becoming free, and desire for life.

IN THE ASHES OF MEMORY
Dir. Rin Jung / 2022

The film takes a form of video essay and documentary combined, consisting of two parts. In the first part, the filmmaker narrates an essay on how to read trauma as a “missing history” while visually revealing their own trauma and stories. Drawing from the trauma theory narrative on constant attempt to find this missing history, the filmmaker speaks of how trauma brings forth pain yet at the same time ironically becomes the reason to keep on living. The filmmaker interviews several people to share their memories and trauma that they want to process and cope with. The interviewees share various stories, from being in an abusive relationship to grieving passing of their father. With these trauma uttered, in the second part, the filmmaker - who is also a tattoo artist - prescribes tattoo designs based on the stories told while explaining why tattoos matter in the individual’s relationship with their trauma and body. Incorporating Dialectical Behavioral Therapy approach in the interviews, the filmmaker comes from the ‘Wise Mind’ to design the tattoos. Also inspired by Korean shamanistic talismans called Bujeok which is used to bridge or intervene, the filmmaker tattoos the participants with these designs, that becomes both a mark to remind them of their strength and a reclamation of their bodies. The final interviews after the tattooing presents the affect of the tattoos on thinking about trauma.

THE LOST MEMORY OF THE COLONY- Postcolonial
Melancholia and Subversive Gaze in Third World Cinema

Video Essay / 2022

“After
you died I could not hold a funeral,

And
so my life became a funeral.”

―
Han Kang, Human Acts

Melancholia is
generally defined as a sentiment of deep sadness or gloom often
associated with depression and pessimism. In Freud’s term,
melancholia occurs when the subject cannot identify what they have
lost in the process of grief. And melancholia is
crucial in discussing the affect of colonialism because of the
inability to identify the object of loss. The violence that
colonialism enforces to individuals has no specific object or aim. However, as Susan
Sontag says, it is known that the character difference of Melancholy
from regular depression is that this sentiment has charm and passion
in it, which often has creative and artistic power. So cinema, could
also be one way this melancholia from colonialism could be expressed
and transformed. Thus, based on this
notion of melancholia and its relation to cinema and colonialism, We
could see strong postcolonial melancholia configured in many third
world cinema. It is crucial to recognize the postcolonial melancholia
in these non Western films because the melancholia is precisely the
fuel for it to be expressed through the film, that is an artistic
medium. So, let’s take a look at a couple non-western films that
illustrate such postcolonial melancholia.

In Ousmane Sembene’s
Black Girl, a French/Senegalese film, the protagonist Diouana is a
young girl from a poor village outside of Dakar, Senegal. She dreams
of moving to France to work and living a new cosmopolitan lifestyle.
Then she gets hired by a French couple, and her anticipation grows.
Yet not long after in France, she starts experiencing harsh treatment
from the couple, who forces her to work as a servant. Realizing the
disparity between the reality and what she dreamt of, Diouana feels
more and more depressed, lonely, and hopeless. Unable to do anything
about her situation, she eventually commits suicide. The film is a
tragic portrayal of lingering colonialism and racism that haunt an
individual, even after when they were able to leave the colonized
space. Faced with such violence, Diouana becomes a melancholic figure
who cannot identify or retrieve what she has lost. The perpetuated
melancholia leads her to cease her own life, which seems like the
only active action that she could take to resist the oppression and
discrimination she struggled with. The film depicts intense
postcolonial melancholia through Diouna and her experience. And based
on a real incident, Sembene’s audiovisual utterance of this story
is a memorial and cinematic transmutation of Diouana’s death, and
further, the grief of colonialism.

On the other hand,
in a 60s Korean neorealist film Aimless Bullet, directed by Yoo
Hyun-mok, postcolonial melancholia is expressed more multidimensional
and layered. Set in the period right after the Korean war, that is an
event closely related to the aftermath of Japanese colonialism, the
film shows various characters who experience the postcolonial and
postwar melancholia in different terms. Chul-ho and Young-ho’s
family struggles with poverty, angst, and melancholia that the
postcolonial and postwar condition has caused. For Young-ho, after a
course of close ones’ death and disappearance, he questions the
morality and values of humanity. In desperation, he decides to rob a
bank. Chul-ho, who listened to Young-ho’s vent before the robbery,
is left with loss of most of his family members as his wife dies in
the labor as well. Feeling hopeless, Chul-ho impulsively pulls out
both his aching wisdom teeth and directs a taxi to go nowhere as he
laments “maybe you’re right, I might be the aimless bullet of the
creator” while bleeding and losing consciousness. Chul-ho and
Young-ho both are melancholic figures but they manifest it
differently. Chul-ho’s is that of Nietzsche’s passive nihilism
where one wallows in sadness and depression, while Young-ho’s is
active nihilism where one attempts to take an action out of it. Yet
both vividly express the death drive and melancholia from the
colonialism and war.

These portrayals of
postcolonial melancholia in third world cinema holds subversive gaze.
It is subversive in a sense that these films focus on and center
around the figures who are not white males in the Western world. And
unlike mainstream narrative films that depict the heroic journey of a
protagonist, these films remember tragic moments and melancholia of
an ordinary individuals. Further, the films don’t just show these
but twist the story with the act of resistance. Diouana’s suicide,
and Young-ho’s bank robbery are both somewhat a resistance and a
refusal to be subjected to the postcolonial and colonial reality,
while at the same time intensifies the melancholia. And most
importantly, I believe the mere fact that these directors and
filmmakers made these stories into an artistic form that is a film is
in itself a creative and cinematic resistance of the transformative
and subversive potential of postcolonial melancholia.
